July brings watermelon!

F. is the provider; I am the caregiver. In our garden, this fleshes out to mean that I tend to the garden, and he waters it. Just yesterday, he asked me “when will we get some watermelon?” Having never had much success growing squash in our plot, I was only cautiously hopeful searching past the tangling vine’s large leaves.

I didn’t expect baby watermelons to be so fuzzy.

And I didn’t expect to find anything substantial.

And I certainly didn’t expect to find this round, substantial striped baby watermelon growing on the vine.

Isn’t she pretty? She’s the largest fruit from a vine that I’ve ever grown. But isn’t that what gardening is about? All those firsts. I’m hoping we’ll be able to harvest our first watermelon très bientôt‎. Grow, baby, grow!
