Baby Eggs

March 1, 2011

Since mid-January, we’ve been besieged by eggs. Baby chicken eggs! We are fairly certain that every one in the flock is now laying. It’s been quite interesting indeed to see the different sizes the girls are laying while they try to “figure it out.” It appears that this egg-laying takes a bit of practice to get consistent!

Here’s a peek at some of the different sizes we’ve been getting. I’m fairly certain that monster of a brown egg will be a triple yolk it’s so large!

For fun, here’s a photo of the girls in a “line up” snacking on their favorite: soft bread morsels. What a mötley crüe we have! From the right, there’s “Big Red” (Rhode Island Red), “Madeleine” (Buff Orphington), and “Madame Poule,” “Baby,” and “Blanca” (all Ameraucanas)

In other exciting news, two of my sweet hens have been amiable to me picking them up. This is very exciting as most of the girls scurry away if I step towards them without treats in site! But “Mo” and “Baby” are both quite sweet and will hunch down to wait for me to pick them up for a cuddle. It’s become a favorite activity: chicken petting! Here’s a shot of me with Mo.
